Home Hospitalization for Teens with Eating Disorders

Home Hospitalization for Teens with Eating Disorders

In recent years, there has been a growing understanding that the most effective treatment for eating disorders is family-based treatment. At Sabar Health, we have created a new service—hospitalization and treatment of eating disorders in adolescents at home—to address the needs of teenagers struggling with eating disorders and their families while maintaining the daily routine of the entire household.

    Who Is This Service For?

The service is designed for adolescents aged 11-18 who are dealing with one or more of the following diagnoses:

    • Anorexia Nervosa
    • Bulimia Nervosa
    • Binge Eating Disorder
    • Atypical Anorexia

    About the Service

Recognizing the importance of keeping these patients at home, within their family environment, Sabar Health has decided to provide care within the home setting. This approach enables the adolescent to maintain their daily routine (school, friends, extracurricular activities, etc.) while integrating treatment into their regular life, instead of being hospitalized and removed from their usual environment. The treatment approach emphasizes parents as primary caregivers and strengthens their therapeutic abilities.

The goal of the service is to provide multidisciplinary treatment for adolescents and their families, helping them cope with the illness in a natural and supportive home environment.

The Treatment is provided in the following situations:

    • As an alternative to hospitalization in a dedicated ward (closed ward).
    • As an alternative to day hospitalization for eating disorders.
    • As follow-up treatment after hospitalization in a pediatric ward for refeeding and initial medical stabilization.

    The Team

The dedicated multidisciplinary team assigned to each family remains constant throughout the entire home treatment period. The team includes an adolescent physician, a family therapist, a mentor, and a dietitian (with additional support from a child psychiatrist and child psychologist as needed). The team is available by phone for any questions or concerns.

Each team member will conduct regular meetings with the adolescent and their family, either in person or online, addressing both the physical and psychological aspects of treatment. The goal is to establish a balanced and healthy routine for the adolescent and their family.

A personalized treatment plan will be developed for each adolescent, with the frequency of visits determined based on the plan and the needs of the adolescent and their family, using a hybrid approach.
